In the fall semester of 1990, a student chapter of The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was founded at The State University of New York at Buffalo (SHPE-UB) by Mr. Juan C. Rodriguez and Mr. Drexel E.Gidney.
Mr. Rodriguez, a senior majoring in Aerospace Engineering, and Mr. Gidney, a Senior Academic Advisor and Director of Minority Programs in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, got the ball rolling and organized an informational meeting on September 26, 1990, with members of SHPE-ROC Professional Chapter, UB engineering faculty and staff, as well as many prospective student members. Soon after, The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers - UB Student Chapter was established.
Flash forward to Covid-Era at UB, SHPE has, for the most part, disbanded. Like many other things during COVID-19, the UB Chapter of SHPE did not survive through constant lockdowns and policy changes. For most of COVID-19, SHPE was forgotten and only really kept alive by a few people, just barely satisfying the top 4 officers' requirement. However, in 2023, a small group of passionate engineering students decided to reignite the chapter and begin holding open meetings with the entire student board. These people consisted of: Victoria Pimenta Reyes, Daniel Galdamez, Jaylean Ureña, and Angela Gutierrez. UB SHPE started to grow from there and cemented itself (hopefully forever) as a prominent engineering club on campus here at UB.
