Our Mission
SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.
SHPE University at Buffalo
SHPE UB inspires and motivates underrepresented students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at the University at Buffalo and in the Buffalo area. SHPE UB also provides undergraduates with a Big Brother/Sister program and prepares students for the industry and graduate school.

Our History
Chapter Founded
A student chapter of The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was founded at The State University of New York at Buffalo by Mr. Juan C. Rodriguez and Mr. Drexel E. Gidney. Mr. Rodriguez, a senior majoring in Aerospace Engineering, and Mr. Gidney, a Senior Academic Advisor and Director of Minority Programs in UB SEAS, organized an informational meeting on September 26, 1990 — and SHPE UB was born.
The COVID Years
Like so many things during the pandemic, the UB Chapter of SHPE did not emerge from COVID-19 unscathed. Amid constant lockdowns and shifting university policies, the chapter largely disbanded. For the better part of two years, SHPE UB was kept alive by only a handful of dedicated members — just enough to meet the minimum four-officer requirement and preserve the chapter's standing.
Reignited
In 2023, a small group of passionate engineering students took it upon themselves to breathe new life into the chapter. They began hosting open meetings, rebuilt a full student board, and laid the groundwork for the active, growing community SHPE UB is today.
Growing Stronger
Over three decades later, SHPE UB continues to grow as a community of engineers, scientists, and leaders. From Nationals trips to BattleBots competitions, our chapter remains one of the most active student organizations at UB SEAS.
